Description

I. Position Summary:

The Medical Technologist provides technical quality testing for neonates, pediatrics, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients in the laboratory setting in compliance with CAP, JCAHO, OSHA, and CLIA Standards. He/she functions within the philosophy, policies and procedure of North Suburban Medical Center, Inc., and represents the hospital within and outside the organization. A thorough understanding and application of the "Medical Technology" Practice are essential due to the intense field of critical patient testing. Therefore, the laboratory employees must continuously strive to improve clinical testing through formal and informal education.

Qualifications::

Position Requirements:

A. Licensure/Certification/Registration:

ASCP, NCA, AMT (One required)

B. Education:

A college graduate or equivalent who has passed a certification examination for Medical Technologist by ASCP, NCA, or AMT. Certification requires a B.A. or B.S. in Medical Technology or related field (Chemistry, Biology, etc.), and a one year internship or appropriate experience prior to examination.

C. Experience:

Experience in a hospital laboratory is desired but not necessary. CLIA requirements for Supervisory position.

D. Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

1. The Medical Technologist shall integrate current scientific knowledge with technical competency which relates to the Laboratory Department.

a. The Medical Technologist shall participate in establishing and following written policies and procedures for ordering, inventory allowances, monitoring inventory supply, maintenance program, and performing the maintenance program.

b. She/he demonstrates knowledge, responsibility, and participates in the implementation of all aspects of the Safety/Chemical Hygiene Plan, Infectious/Exposure Control Plan, Electrical Safety, Disaster Plan, Code Blue Plan, Fire Plan, Computer Systems, Departmental P&Ps, Ethics, Compliance, and CQI.

2. The Medical Technologist shall currently be technically and theoretically knowledgeable of instruments and tests in medical technology.

a. The Medical Technologist will participate in the evaluation, introduction, and implementation of new procedures.

b. The Medical Technologist will participate in the evaluation, introduction, and implementation of new equipment.

c. The Medical Technologist displays technical skills and knowledge to ensure timely and accurate patient test results and Quality Control; documents according to P&P.

d. The Medical Technologist makes independent judgmental decisions relating to technical aspects of testing procedures, Quality Control, and results; i.e., work order, problem solving, technical testing problems and etc.

e. The Medical Technologist shall be able to perform venipunctures and capillary collection for specimen procurement with knowledge of age related techniques and physical structure. The Medical Technologist will be competent to age-related blood obtainment techniques, amounts of blood obtained, laboratory values, abuse, and communications; focusing on neonates, pediatrics, adolescents, adults, and geriatric populations.

NOTE: Therapeutic Phlebotomies, Bleeding Times and Arterial Specimen Collection are required by Certified Technologists - departmental specified. They must exhibit communication skills necessary to explain procedure(s) to patients of various ages (pediatrics, parents of neonates, adolescents, adults, geriatrics).

3. The professional Medical Technologist shall function effectively as a Charge Tech Medical Technologist. (This is upon completion of orientation to this role by the Department Coordinator/designee.)

4. The Laboratory Department shall have an explicit, systematic, and on-going continuous Performance Improvement Program.

a. All employees of the Laboratory shall facilitate and participate in current and future CQI monitoring and implement changes accordingly.

b. Medical Technologists shall assist in collection of data, reviewing and revising the CQI program as to be in compliance with accrediting agencies, hospital goals, departmental policies and procedures.

c. All Medical Technologists shall demonstrate knowledge and responsibility for the on-going CQI.

5. The Medical Technologist shall integrate current scientific knowledge and technology into their work practices.

a. Medical Technologists will assist in orientation and training of new employees and students.

b. Medical Technologists will participate in continuing education provided to departments during working hours.

c. Medical Technologists will yearly participate and complete Job Skills/Competency Check program.

6. The Medical Technologist shall maintain an atmosphere of professionalism.

a. Communicates technical and general information to peers, medical personnel and customers in a positive, courteous, and professional manner.

b. Promotes a positive image in daily and professional activities.

c. Displays consideration to all customers and peers.

d. Maintains a clean, stocked, and orderly work area.

7. Assists in a variety of job related duties as assigned by the Laboratory Director.

8. Responsibility for confidentiality.

9. Relationships/Communication.

a. The Laboratory requires a high level of interaction with all patient care areas and physicians, and a moderate level of interaction with patients. There are a multitude of communication systems to be addressed with the nursing staff, physicians, patients, and other ancillary departments. The relationships and lines of communication of staff, departments and support groups are open and clearly delineated in the hospital organizational chart. This allows for a dynamic and flexible Laboratory Department that is responsive to both patient and employee needs.
